Submissions

Ember Chasm Review is an Arizona-based literary magazine and craft journal. We publish innovative, brutally honest prose and poetry. In other words, we want stories that scream in libraries, stories that veer us down a hidden road in a well-known city—we want the stories you construct outside your comfort zone. Diversity of content is appreciated: play with genre, form. Break walls and show us the mold sprouting beneath. We especially encourage submissions from emerging, unpublished, and undergraduate writers.

To get a sense of what we enjoy reading, look at authors like Carmen Maria Machado, Ted Chiang, Aimee Bender, Miranda July, Ann Cummins, Virginia Woolf, and Raymond Carver. For poetry: Neil Hilborn, Allen Ginsburg, Billy Collins, Blythe Baird, Sylvia Plath, and Sherwin Bitsui. Give us what we haven’t read before; give us what we didn’t know we wanted.

Though Ember Chasm only accepts previously unpublished work, we are happy to review simultaneous submissions. Just let us know if your piece is accepted elsewhere.

As for rights, you own your work, and all other rights associated with it.

We publish online issues three times a year, tentatively in March, August, and November, and we also publish a contest issue once a year.

Let’s talk cost. Ember Chasm is run by students, teachers, volunteers, and above all, our dedication is to literature, and illuminating the fantastic stories that exist in the world we live in. So, in that vein, access to all of our online issues is free. No subscription, no cost, no locks. Unfortunately, since we aren’t backed by any grants or universities, and without revenue generated from those subscriptions, and to cover the costs of production (website fees and maintenance, Submittable fees, issue software), we must charge a small submission fee. When we can, we’ll offer free submissions. If you can’t afford the submission fee, email us and we’ll see what we can do.

As of now, we can’t pay our authors for regular issues. We’re sorry: we will once we get off the ground. However, everyone published in Ember Chasm will receive a free print copy of their issue. Contests will consist of monetary awards, physical trophies, a free print issue copy, and an interview.

Thank you for understanding; we can’t wait to be moved by what you send us—for what matters more than the stories we tell? Also, if you like our method, consider donating. Your contribution will help keep art accessible to everyone, and you’ll get some magnificent perks.

If you have any questions about submissions, please email us at staff@emberchasmreview.com.
